Getting to Grips With Gas Cylinders

Getting to Grips With Gas Cylinders

16 February 2017 by Gas Mart Hilton

Gone are the days when gas cylinders were solely used to heat up food on camping trips. With the advent of a whole host of different cylinder sizes to choose from, using gas in your home and in everyday life has never been easier and more cost effective.

From hotplates to braais, heaters to fridges, and even lights and geysers: whatever your household needs, there is always a gas cylinder to power them.

Ranges of cylinders usually start with the small 1.7kg cylinder and go all the way up to a 48kg cylinder. In general the different gas cylinder sizes are 1.7kg, 3kg, 4.5kg, 6kg, 9kg, 19kg & 48kg. The question is how do you choose the right one?

Choosing the Right Size

The two main things to consider when deciding on the size of your cylinder, is how often you'll need to move the product around and how much gas the product consumes. The 1.7kg to 7kg cylinders can be used for screw-on products that don't use a regulator, as the product itself will control the flow of gas that is needed for the unit to function properly. When using larger products that require a regulator then it's best to use a 9kg to 48kg cylinder together with the respective regulator.

If you're using a smaller product such as a hotplate, heater, lighting or braai then the smaller cylinders (1.7kg - 9kg) will work perfectly. This also means that you can easily move the product around, while ensuring that it doesn't consume too much gas. However, for bigger products that consume more gas and don't need to be moved around, such as boiling tables, gas stoves, geyser, fridge or freezers, then a bigger cylinder (9kg - 48kg) is ideal. This makes the product more economical, as it ensures that the cylinder will last longer before needing to be filled or changed.

Why Go Gas?

You may be feeling a bit hesitant to switch to the unknown, but there are a number of reasons why gas is a better power solution. Not only are gas cylinders easy to transport, but they're also the more sustainable energy solution. Gas produces less harmful emissions than many fossil fuels, making them the most eco-friendly option. Beyond this, they can also be refilled, are efficient and economical. As they are safe to use almost anywhere, gas is the perfect alternative to any other power or fuel source.

Safety First

With all things gas related, remember to ensure that your cylinders are approved by the LPGSA and that you're getting your gas from a reputable supplier. Also ensure the gas products that require a COC are installed or connected by an authorised gas installer, especially for the bigger products such as gas stoves, geysers, hobs and ovens. After the installer has completed the job always ask for your COC (Certificate of Compliance).

When using cylinders, safety is always important. Make sure you only open the cylinder valve one and a half turns and fill or exchange your cylinder at a reputable dealer. When not in use make sure that the cylinder valve is fully closed, and never remove the regulator. When replacing the perishables, such as the "O"-ring, hose and regulator, always ensure that you use genuine parts.

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind when using gas cylinders:

  • Always transport, store and use your cylinder in an upright position.
  • For refills or exchanges please refer to our dealer contact details.
  • Check that the logo on the valve seal matches the logo on the cylinder.
  • No/clear seal indicates the cylinder has been illegally filled. Do not accept it! Illegal cylinders may be overfilled which could make it potentially hazardous.
  • If a cylinder is under filled, you're paying for more than you're receiving.
  • If you bought your cylinder, you own it and can have it filled. Maintaining it is your responsibility.
  • If you paid a deposit on the cylinder you are loaning it. When empty, it must be exchanged for a full one. Maintaining it is the responsibility of the (brand) owner.

Getting to Know LPG

by Gas Mart Hilton
Simply put LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) is a versatile fuel commonly used in South Africa and around the world. The word “liquefied” is important because at normal temperature and pressures LPG is gaseous, but when exposed to pressure or cooling it changes into a liquid form. When the LP Gas...

As the choice of professional chefs worldwide, LPG has become known for its responsiveness to the intuitive touch and for its ability to adapt its heat output instantly. The ability to instantly change the input heat gives a chef the possibility to cook any food at the correct temperature during the preparation process.

LPG is also the ideal source of energy for bakeries, as it brings ovens to the right temperature quickly and maintains the required heat levels efficiently, without the danger of a power dip that can ruin a bake. Some pastry chefs even believe that LPG improves the quality of the baking by creating a uniquely moist environment.

Supermarket owners with in-store bakeries leverage the advantage of having gas on tap by using LPG to prepare food in other areas of their business and for temporarily heating spaces during cold spells.

Industrial Applications

When it comes to versatility, nothing compares to LP Gas. That’s what makes it the perfect industrial energy solution. Among other things, LPG is commonly used in sugar cone baking, pressed cone baking, cookie baking ovens, powder coating, spray booths, cake oven baking, shrink wrapping, metal smelting and concrete curing.

There are also numerous commercial applications for LPG energy, as it offers an economical solution for cooking and cooling equipment, space heaters, boilers and more. Besides being flexible, reliable and affordable, LPG also has reduced carbon emissions, making it a more environmentally sound solution. This also means that appliances will require less maintenance than with any other fuel.

LPG is also used in many applications in the industrial sector such as:

  • Forklifts: Not only are LP Gas forklifts proven to be the most reliable when it comes to indoor and outdoor use, they also offer lower upfront costs than electric models and a smaller carbon footprint. Using LPG also means faster refuelling, reducing downtime, and reduced maintenance costs, as there is less wear and tear.
  • Food Processing: LPG is widely used in many food-processing systems because of its clean burning properties. In many instances, such as bakeries and butcheries, LPG is the preferred energy option as this means that products will not be exposed to the risk of contamination.
  • Ceramics: When it comes to pottery, roofing, ceramic tiles and sanitary ware, LPG is the energy of choice. This is because ceramics made of clay require a high heating value in order to dry and become hard and slick. As LPG is easily controllable with a clean combustion, less maintenance is required for burners and kilns, leading to less downtime, reduced costs and increased productivity.
  • Agriculture: When it comes to farming, LPG is the fail-safe way to fire critical heating processes, stabilise inputs, and control the costs on processes that are used on an intermittent or seasonal basis. With the power to run even the largest agricultural operation and the portability to reach every area of the farm, LPG is successfully used in a range of crop drying applications, as well as for nut roasting, pig farrowing, and chicken brooding.
Outdoor Use

LPG is able to go wherever your adventurous spirit takes you! It is the portable energy answer to the great outdoors, with applications ranging from outdoor catering, to space heating and hot water at temporary campsites. So whether you find yourself on a mountain peek or deep in the bush, LPG will be there to make sure you experience these wonders in style.

Do you own a caravan? Then you no doubt already know the benefits of an uninterrupted LP Gas supply. Along with all the usual applications you can also use it in your gas braai, your patio heater or even your fridge. Come rain or shine, Gas Mart will always be there to supply you with the perfect energy solution for your leisure activity or adventure!

Gas Mart also provides the camper with a variety of other camping equipment such as portable braais, cookers and Gas lights. Other products such as camping chairs and tents can be ordered through our large list of suppliers.
